Chicago Students Celebrate First Day of School with Warm Welcome
Thousands of children in Chicago Public Schools started their new academic year on August 24, 2026. Teachers and staff greeted students with enthusiasm, rolling out a red carpet at Leland Elementary in the Austin neighborhood. Students returned to a welcoming atmosphere, creating a festive mood on the first day of school.
Ashli Reynolds prepared her son Ashton, age seven, for his first day of second grade at Harold Washington Elementary in the Burnside area. Parents played a key role in getting their children ready, making the start of the school year a family affair.
Mayor Brandon Johnson was present at Leland Elementary, helping to greet students. The involvement of city officials highlighted the importance of education in the community.
At another location, Maria Del Rocio Rodriguez attended to her children as they prepared for their first school day. Her children, Omar, 12, and Valeria, 4, enjoyed breakfast at home. Meanwhile, Maria guided her younger daughters, Valeria, and Melissa into the mobile classroom at Matthew Gallistel Language Academy. Due to a scheduling surprise, their preschool officially started the following Tuesday. Paraprofessionals Lucia Serrano and Zayra Cabrera stood by to assist.
Adding to the celebration, Mayor Johnson joined teachers and staff at Roswell B. Mason Elementary School in North Lawndale. He danced through the hallways, bringing excitement and joy to the returning students.
