Chiefs Prepare for Preseason Without Mahomes

Chiefs coach Andy Reid announced a high likelihood that quarterback Patrick Mahomes will not participate in the upcoming preseason opener against the Rams, and he may sit out the entire preseason. This follows his knee surgery last December to repair torn ligaments.

Reid commented, “There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him. Percentages are leaning that way.” While Mahomes has been actively participating in training without restrictions, Reid is considering keeping him out to focus on his recovery.

Mahomes has been eager to return to full contact, mentioning he’s ready for on-field play. However, Reid may reserve playing time to provide experience to other quarterbacks. The team has Justin Fields, acquired from the Jets, and rookie Garrett Nussmeier, who both need exposure to the new offense.

Reid emphasized, “We’ve got new people … behind (Mahomes) that need some work. The more reps they get, the better.” Kansas City aims to develop its backup quarterbacks during these preseason games.

Injuries have affected several players. Offensive guard Trey Smith experienced hip discomfort, which is not considered severe. Other players, including defensive end Ashton Gillotte and linebacker Drue Tranquill, have minor injuries. Each is expected to recover without long-term issues.

Wide receiver Cyrus Allen returned to practice after a shin injury but avoided contact drills. Reid noted, “He did a good job when he was back in there. He’s focused in. He wants to get out there.” Allen is gradually reintegrated into team activities and remains engaged in meetings.
