China has promoted two officers to the rank of general as part of ongoing efforts to address corruption within its military. The promotions of Zhang Shuguang and Wang Gang reflect a broader strategy to ensure allegiance to the Communist Party and its leader, Xi Jinping.
Xi Jinping, also the head of the military, presented the promotion orders in a ceremony held in Beijing. Zhang, recognized for his investigative role, has been appointed head of the division handling corruption investigations within the Central Military Commission (CMC), the military’s principal governing body. These actions are believed to position them to fill open spots on the diminishing seven-member commission, which Xi chairs.
Currently, Zhang Shengmin is the sole active member alongside Xi after the recent removal of several leaders through anti-corruption purges. With the commission effectively reduced, the military’s leadership structure is undergoing significant changes. The recent promotion decisions are expected to stabilize the commission’s membership until a new body is formed at the end of its existing term next year.
The shake-up underscores a deliberate attempt to align military operations with party priorities, continuing efforts to reinforce Xi’s influence in the armed forces. This restructuring remains pivotal for maintaining unity and discipline within China’s military ranks amidst ongoing scrutiny and reform activities.
