What to Consider Before Buying
Safety
Your safety is paramount when purchasing any motorcycle accessory. Ensure the headset fits well with your helmet style, and secure all wiring and earpieces comfortably before riding. If you’re considering an integrated model, check out BestReview’s guide on Bluetooth motorcycle helmets, certified by the Department of Transportation for safe usage.
The headset should not compromise your riding ability, and speaker volumes should not mask ambient traffic noise.
Compatibility
Most high-end Bluetooth headsets offer cross-brand compatibility, though older or budget models may not. Compatibility is crucial for communication with multiple riders. Knowing the make and models of your friends’ headsets can help in determining whether your chosen model will work with theirs via a quick online search.
Battery Performance
Balance between functionality and longevity is key for rechargeable Bluetooth headsets. Talk time typically ranges from 8 to 20 hours in a quality headset, while standby time can vary from 200 to 1,000 hours when unused.
Key Features to Look For
Sound Quality
Digital advancements allow for high-quality sound over wide frequencies, with some headsets featuring top-brand speakers like JBL. This technology often supports listening to media on the road, where legal.
Hands-free Operation
Many headsets sync with smartphone GPS apps to provide in-ear navigation. This feature is convenient and safer than screen-based maps while moving. Voice command functionality allows operation without removing hands from the handlebars.
Range
Communication distance has improved since Bluetooth 5.0. Midrange headsets often allow communication within 0.5 to 1 mile, while Mesh network tech in high-end models can achieve ranges up to 5 miles.
Cost and Quality
Entry-level headsets typically cost $100 or less. Superior models range from $100-$200, while premium models with Mesh tech are priced above $200.
