The United States men’s national team (USMNT) faces a significant challenge as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Chris Richards, regarded by many as the team’s top defender, is dealing with an ankle injury that prevents him from joining the squad for an international friendly against Senegal.
The USMNT’s head coach, Mauricio Pochettino, shared that Richards’ injury has sidelined him from Crystal Palace’s last two matches this season. Unfortunately, there is currently no definite timeline for Richards’ return to action.
“I think he needs to keep doing his rehab,” Pochettino mentioned to the New York Post. “It’s much better to stay here and plan to train.”
Richards is currently at the USMNT training facility in Atlanta, while the rest of the team travels to Charlotte, North Carolina, for their game against Senegal.
Although Richards was absent during the team’s recent roster announcement in New York, he sent a video message from Germany, where he remained with Crystal Palace for a European final match. Despite being listed as a substitute, he did not play.
Richards has yet to participate in training with the national team. Pochettino seems uncertain about his readiness for the USMNT’s first match against Paraguay on June 12 in Los Angeles.
“The next few days are going to be key to see the possibilities to be ready or not for the World Cup,” Pochettino noted.
While Richards remains on the official roster, FIFA rules allow teams to make last-minute injury-related changes up to 24 hours before their first match.
The USMNT’s pre-World Cup schedule includes matches against Senegal and Germany, followed by their Group D opening match against Paraguay. They will later face Australia in Seattle and Türkiye at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
Richards, a key player at center back, is expected to start in every match if fit. His potential absence leaves a gap in the team’s defense, despite Pochettino’s roster adjustments.
