Convicted Tennessee murderer Christa Pike is in critical condition following two unsuccessful lethal injection attempts. These were related to her 1995 conviction for the murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, Pike’s attorneys confirmed.
“Christa is alive,” lawyer Randy Spivey stated during a news briefing on Thursday. However, he could not comment much on her health status due to limited information and confidentiality rules. “She is in critical condition and receiving lifesaving care,” he added.
Failed Execution Attempts
Pike, who was 18 at the time of the crime, faced execution on Wednesday. She would have been the first woman executed in Tennessee in over 200 years after the U.S. Supreme Court lifted an emergency execution stay.
Details on the unsuccessful injection were shared by another attorney, Stephen Ferrell. He noted that the needle possibly became dislodged or pierced all through Pike’s veins, leading to improper delivery. However, specific medical information remains restricted.
I’m haunted by last night,Spivey remarked, reflecting on the execution attempt.
The execution was supposed to occur at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville where she received two injections, neither of which proved lethal. Pike remained conscious, even raising her head to question if her arm should feel strange. She was still breathing after the second injection.
Concerns and Requests
Prior to the execution, Pike expressed fear over potential injection mishaps, requesting alternative capital punishment methods. These requests were denied. Her attorneys acknowledged that the Tennessee Department of Correction accommodated her plea for an all-female execution team.
Slemmer’s mother traveled from Florida to witness the proceedings but hasn’t commented on the failed execution.
The Crime and Aftermath
Pike, along with Tadaryl Shipp and another accomplice, was involved in Slemmer’s murder. The violent incident involved torture, beating, and crushing of Slemmer’s head. Pike reportedly took a fragment of Slemmer’s skull as a keepsake, which she displayed at school. Shipp also carved symbols into the victim’s body.
Due to this botched execution, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has paused all further scheduled executions and ordered a comprehensive review to ascertain the exact circumstances.
