Christian Athletes Speak Out in the NFL
On The Riley Gaines Show, host Riley Gaines and guest Steve explore how the COVID era has influenced athletes. They discuss media treatment of Christian and conservative viewpoints, and the strong presence of faith in softball. They also address the potential threat sports gambling poses to the integrity of sports. Steve highlights his book, Godball, which examines the rise of outspoken Christian athletes and sports as a meritocracy in American culture.
Recently, following a notable game, Denver Broncos stars expressed their faith on NBC’s national broadcast. Quarterback Bo Nix and safety Talanoa Hufanga credited God for their victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Hufanga, after making key plays, stated, “All praise to God for allowing me to play and enjoy the game.” Nix echoed this, emphasizing the platform and opportunities given by God.
Similar expressions of faith occur regularly in the NFL. Team members and coaches often publicly express their religious beliefs. The contrast between the league’s corporate image and the personal faith of its players and coaches is apparent. Even in a business-focused environment, many in the NFL showcase their religious convictions without hesitation.
“The Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson, after a miraculous game-winning pass, attributed his confidence to prayer, saying, ‘I prayed to Jesus. I prayed to God.'”
Washington Commanders’ player Kain Medrano, substituting for an injured teammate, dedicated a game-winning performance to his fallen comrade, stating, “We’re all praying for him.” In a similar show of faith, after a game win, Jameis Winston credited God for fulfilling his thoughts and praised Jevon Holland for his decisive interception.
New York Giants’ coach John Harbaugh began a press conference by honoring both his Savior and his team, appreciating their perseverance in a challenging match. These instances highlight an unashamed expression of faith among NFL professionals, seen during each game week.
