Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Achieves Record-Breaking Box Office Debut
Christopher Nolan’s latest film, ‘The Odyssey,’ launched with impressive earnings, amassing approximately $124.5 million in domestic sales and an additional $139.6 million globally. This debut surpasses Nolan’s previous work, ‘Oppenheimer,’ and marks his best opening since ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ in 2012.
Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic poem represents a standout moment in the film industry. In a domain dominated by intellectual property rights, Nolan turned one of the oldest literary works into a summer blockbuster. Universal plunged into this project with significant financial backing, following Nolan’s success with ‘Oppenheimer,’ which was awarded Best Picture in 2023.
The film’s production costs reached $250 million, making it one of the priciest R-rated films to date. Additionally, Universal has allocated around $125 million for marketing efforts. Nolan’s reputation drew tremendous anticipation for ‘The Odyssey,’ leading IMAX to open ticket sales a year prior for some showtimes.
Such demand resulted in IMAX theaters scheduling midnight and 3 a.m. showings, all of which sold out. This release marked Nolan’s inaugural feature filmed exclusively with IMAX cameras, a format that significantly boosted sales. IMAX reported revenue of $29.6 million domestically and $51.8 million globally, setting a new weekend record for the company.
Although only 41 IMAX screens could showcase ‘The Odyssey’ in 70 mm format, they contributed $6.3 million to the ticket sales. IMAX is committing its screens solely to the film for a three-week duration.
Nolan has played a pivotal role in revitalizing cinema post-pandemic. His film ‘Tenet’ was one of the first major releases to return to theaters in 2020. Following that, ‘Oppenheimer’ and Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ emerged as significant cinematic events. ‘Oppenheimer’ grossed $975 million worldwide.
‘The Odyssey’ debuted during Hollywood’s most prosperous summer since 2019, with ticket sales up by around 10% from the previous year, as reported by Rentrak. The industry is optimistic for the first $10 billion domestic box office year since the pandemic.
The primary concern for ‘The Odyssey’ is whether its initial success will continue, given the anticipation surrounding its release. The film faced no competition during its opening weekend, nor does it in the subsequent weekend.
IMAX reported that presales for the second weekend are among their top ten, indicating strong interest from audiences desiring to experience it in their preferred format. The next major release competing with ‘The Odyssey’ is Sony’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ on July 31, featuring Tom Holland and Zendaya.

With a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, ‘The Odyssey’ is receiving some of Nolan’s highest accolades. It holds an “A” CinemaScore from audiences, highlighting its warm reception.
