Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Shines Amid Franchise Fatigue

The film landscape this summer has seen Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” stand out prominently at the box office. The film has achieved significant success, grossing $123 million domestically and $263 million globally during its opening weekend. This marked the most successful opening weekend for Nolan, surpassing even “The Dark Knight” trilogy and Oscar winner “Oppenheimer.” Over the following days, “The Odyssey” maintained its box office strength, with its earnings exceeding $320 million globally within the week.

While “The Odyssey” thrived, many franchises struggled. Disney’s live-action “Moana,” featuring Dwayne Johnson, experienced a disappointing debut with $43 million domestically, compared to the original animated version’s $56 million in 2016. The film, which reportedly cost $250 million, has so far brought in only $186 million worldwide, placing Disney at a risk of losing $100 million.

Similarly, “Supergirl” faltered at the box office with a $37 million domestic debut, considerably short of “Superman” from the previous year. This DC Comics Cinematic Universe film from Warner Bros. is set to struggle to reach even $150 million worldwide.

Other franchises, such as “Minions & Monsters” and “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” underperformed compared to their predecessors. “Minions & Monsters” grossed approximately $366 million globally, marking it as the weakest “Despicable Me” franchise entry. Meanwhile, “The Mandalorian & Grogu” grossed $340 million worldwide, becoming the lowest-grossing “Star Wars” film.

Despite these setbacks, certain films exceeded expectations. “Toy Story 5” opened with $159 million domestically and is projected to surpass $1 billion globally. “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” and “Scream 7” also achieved strong openings and sustained global earnings.

Original films have also seen surprising success. “Project Hail Mary,” starring Ryan Gosling, earned over $680 million worldwide, setting a new record for Amazon Studios. “Michael,” a Michael Jackson biopic, achieved over $1 billion globally, topping Lionsgate’s records with its “Hunger Games” and “Twilight” series. Additionally, “Obsession,” a horror film from Curry Barker, surpassed expectations with over $400 million in earnings, outperforming even established franchises.

The trend continued with “Backrooms,” a low-budget horror film by YouTuber Kane Parsons. “Backrooms” debuted with $81 million and grossed more than $360 million globally, setting a benchmark for A24. These successful original and low-budget films highlight shifting audience interests at the box office.

Anticipation now builds for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” a fourth installment in the Tom Holland-led franchise. With its high benchmark set by “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the film’s performance remains to be seen, especially given broader franchise and superhero fatigue affecting the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
