Former CIA Director John Brennan has been summoned to testify before a Florida grand jury next month. This is part of a Justice Department investigation into whether former law enforcement and intelligence officials conspired against President Donald Trump.
Ken Wainstein, Brennan’s attorney, revealed in a court filing that the subpoena was issued last Thursday for Brennan’s appearance on October 15 in Fort Pierce, Florida. Wainstein stated that the subpoena is linked to a broad criminal investigation. This probe is focused on determining whether government officials who have scrutinized Trump over the past decade have worked to deny him civil rights.
Possible Indictment
John Solomon, a commentator, predicts that Brennan might face indictment soon as prosecutors request official transcripts. Brennan, known for his critical stance toward Trump during the Obama administration, has been involved in multiple investigations.
According to Wainstein, Brennan is also considered a target in a separate investigation based in Washington. This probe is evaluating allegations that Brennan lied to Congress in 2023, claims that Brennan and his legal team have consistently refuted.
Leadership Changes
The subpoena was issued amidst changes in the investigation’s leadership. On the same day, prosecutor Joe diGenova resigned from the Justice Department. DiGenova had been leading the inquiry, informally dubbed the “grand conspiracy” investigation.
The Justice Department has yet to announce a successor for diGenova. Wainstein mentioned discussions with Kurt Olsen, another member of the investigative team. Olsen had previously pushed the Justice Department in 2020 to support Trump’s assertions of a stolen election.
The subpoena details emerged shortly before a scheduled court hearing in Washington, which is related to a lawsuit Brennan has filed. Brennan seeks a judicial order for the preservation of all records associated with the investigations targeting him, contending that these documents are vital for contesting any future indictment on grounds of retaliatory prosecution.
