The Cincinnati Bengals surprised many in 2021 by not only reaching the postseason but also advancing to the Super Bowl. This achievement was a rare feat for any NFL team from Ohio. However, despite initial success, the team has not returned to the Super Bowl and has missed the playoffs for three consecutive seasons.
During the offseason, the Bengals focused on strengthening their defense and upgrading the offensive line. These efforts aim to provide quarterback Joe Burrow with the tools necessary to lead the team back to championship contention. Joe Burrow has expressed confidence in the current roster, calling the team a Super Bowl-caliber squad. He has made it clear that 2026 could be the year when everything falls into place.
“I’ve never understood why people are scared to say it,” Burrow said in discussion with Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. “I guess people get scared of how the media will portray them or their team in a certain way. But you have to set expectations with yourself, your teammates, your organization. Everybody says they want to win the Super Bowl, you talk about it every day, you set that expectation every day, you go and work for it every single day. I mean, I don’t know the answer to that for everybody, but that’s what I want to do, that’s what I’m trying to do, that’s what I do this for.”
Burrow’s football journey includes success at Athens High School in The Plains, Ohio, Ohio State, LSU, and now Cincinnati. His standout 2019 season at LSU, where he won the Heisman Trophy, remains one of college football’s most remarkable seasons. The Bengals reached the Super Bowl in Burrow’s second year, and he has earned three Pro Bowl selections and two Comeback Player of the Year awards. As he approaches his seventh year in the league and turns 30 in December, Burrow presses for the organization to match his high expectations. He acknowledges the championship-or-bust mentality surrounding the Bengals.
