The Reflecting Pool in Washington is facing issues with peeling paint following renovations ordered by President Donald Trump. Trump has suggested that the damage might be intentional. On Friday night, he shared on his social media site about problems with vandalism at the Reflecting Pool, including destruction of the grass around it and efforts to damage the newly installed surface. However, he did not provide evidence to back his claims.
Agencies responsible for the maintenance and security of the National Mall — including the U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, and Interior Department — have not immediately commented on the matter. On June 20, 2026, visitors observed National Park Service employees cleaning the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool using vacuums. The Washington Post noted that Park Police had arrested an individual who was allegedly peeling paint from the pool. Despite this, the presence of algae and detached blue paint suggests other issues at play.
Trump further alleged that chemicals, similar to those used on the National Mall, have been used on the Reflecting Pool to damage it. His reference was to numbers “86 47” scorched into the grass at the National Mall, which authorities are investigating. The numbers might symbolize a threat to Trump, the 47th president, as “86” can imply ‘getting rid of.’
The situation has drawn attention due to the significant investment of over $14 million for renovating the pool in preparation for the America 250 celebrations. Despite the efforts, algae has returned the pool’s water to a green shade, opposed to the desired “American flag blue” bottom. Federal workers attempted to manage the algae with chemicals, yet substantial portions of blue paint have detached, revealing the pool’s rocky bottom.
On June 20, 2026, amidst preparations for America’s 250th anniversary, deputized officers from the Oklahoma City Police Department assisted with security around the Reflecting Pool, where sections of blue coating continued to peel.
After considerable resources applied to its beautification, Washington’s Reflecting Pool remains in an undesirable state, generating further scrutiny into the causes of its deterioration.
