Cleveland Browns Trade Shakes NFL Landscape, Bringing Jared Verse Home
On June 1, the Cleveland Browns made a surprising trade with the Los Angeles Rams that had a significant impact on the NFL. The Browns traded Myles Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, to the Rams. In exchange, they received Jared Verse, a promising edge rusher, along with a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and a 2029 third-round pick.
Jared Verse, speaking to Browns reporters on Wednesday, expressed his initial reaction to the trade. “It caught me by surprise. I loved L.A., the coaches, the organization, my teammates, everybody who was a part of it… It was upsetting. I was upset for a good little bit of time. But you’re an athlete, you understand the nature of the business,” Verse stated. Despite the initial shock, Verse expressed enthusiasm about joining the Browns, saying, “I’m happy to be a part of the Browns. I’m happy that they believed in me and that they were able to make that trade and bring me here. I truly do believe in everybody in the locker room, but it was upsetting at first,” he added.
Jared Verse comes to Cleveland as one of the most talented young players in the league. Drafted 19th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft from Florida State, Verse quickly established himself as a powerful force on the field. In his rookie season, he accumulated 66 tackles, 18 quarterback hits, 11 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks over 17 games, earning the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
Verse continued to improve in his second year, leading all edge rushers in quarterback hits with 27 and ranking third in hurries with 64. He finished the season with 58 tackles, 7.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, 11 tackles for loss, and 36 pressures, which tied him for ninth-most in the NFL. His rapid ascent has not gone unnoticed, earning him Pro Bowl honors in each of his first two years and amassing 12 career sacks by age 25.
Jared Verse’s potential growth aligns with the Browns’ rebuilding strategy. If the team’s efforts lead to a Super Bowl, Verse could become a leading defender in the league. For the Rams, acquiring Myles Garrett makes sense as they aim for a Super Bowl run with a team that includes veterans like 38-year-old Matthew Stafford and 33-year-old Davante Adams. The move is mutually beneficial. The Rams secure one of the best players in football, while the Browns gain a young talent and future draft assets to bolster their rebuilding efforts.
Additionally, Jared Verse’s move to Cleveland signifies a return to his home state of Ohio, as he is originally from Dayton. He now becomes the face of the Browns’ rejuvenation efforts.
