Close Senate Race in Michigan: El-Sayed vs. Rogers

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed holds a slight lead over Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s competitive U.S. Senate race, according to a recent poll by the TechnoMetrica Institute of Policy and Politics (TIPP). As election day approaches, Democrats aim to gain four seats to reclaim Senate control, facing a challenging electoral map. Key issues like the economy, the ongoing conflict in Iran, and former President Donald Trump’s declining approval ratings may present opportunities for Democrats to flip the Senate. Currently, Republicans maintain a 53-47 Senate majority.

Democratic Concerns

The poll indicating El-Sayed’s lead emerges during debates among Democrats about his prospects for the general election. El-Sayed, a progressive candidate, secured victory over U.S. Representative Haley Stevens in the primary despite Stevens having substantial party backing. While his win invigorated the progressive base, some Democratic strategists question his ability to beat Rogers in this pivotal race.

With less than 100 days to the election, both candidates are intensifying their voter mobilization efforts in Michigan. Newsweek has reached out to the El-Sayed and Rogers campaigns for comments and is awaiting responses.

Poll Details

The TIPP survey, conducted on 1,528 registered Michigan voters for the League of American Workers, shows El-Sayed leading Rogers with 45% of the vote compared to Rogers’ 42%. Approximately 7% of respondents preferred other candidates, while 6% remained undecided. The poll reveals 61% voter satisfaction with El-Sayed as the Democratic nominee, whereas 29% expressed dissatisfaction, and 10% were unsure.

Regarding favorability, El-Sayed received 39% positive and 44% negative views, with 17% undecided or indifferent. Rogers garnered 37% favorable, 42% unfavorable opinions, and 21% unsure respondents. Among 588 Democratic primary voters, 45% supported Stevens, and 43% backed El-Sayed. The poll ran from August 6 to 10, with a margin of error of ±2.6 percentage points. TIPP has earned a reputation for accuracy in past presidential elections, with Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin ranking them highly among polling firms.

Competitive Michigan Race

The race between El-Sayed and Rogers garners national interest as they compete for the Senate seat vacated by retiring Democrat Gary Peters. Democrats have historically held this seat, but Michigan often presents closely contested and unpredictable elections. In 2016, Senator Bernie Sanders won the Democratic primary against Hillary Clinton, while in the general election, the state narrowly backed Trump. Michigan is recognized as a vital battleground, oscillating between Democratic and Republican support in presidential elections.

Past election margins have been tight. Trump won Michigan narrowly in 2024 over Vice President Kamala Harris, while President Joe Biden secured it in 2020. Trump’s initial campaign win in 2016 was by a slim margin of approximately 10,700 votes. Trump has endorsed Rogers in the current race.

Both The Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball currently rate the Michigan Senate race as a “toss-up.”

Other Polls’ Insights

The race has remained tight across various polls, reflecting a close contest between Rogers and El-Sayed. A recent Fox News poll with 1,006 registered voters from Michigan indicated Rogers leading El-Sayed with 51% to 47%, with a 3% margin of error. EPIC-MRA’s July poll showed a slight 3% advantage for Rogers, while a Mitchell Research & Communications poll recorded a tie at 45%. Prediction markets vary slightly but generally suggest a slight edge for El-Sayed.

Michigan Governor’s Race

The TIPP survey also evaluated the gubernatorial race, showing Democratic nominee Jocelyn Benson leading Republican John James with 53% support to James’ 37%. The governor’s race is another significant battle in Michigan’s ballot, as Benson and James compete to replace Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Benson has served as Michigan’s Secretary of State since 2019, whereas James, also backed by Trump, is a congressman and previous Senate candidate.

Fox News conducted a poll showing Benson with a narrower 5-point lead over James. With less than three months to the election, Michigan remains a crucial political battleground, as candidates in Senate and gubernatorial races work to secure voter support.
