Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday recently discussed potential actions against Penn State following the discovery of an alleged cocaine trafficking network within the university’s fraternities. Authorities revealed that approximately 1 kilogram of cocaine was trafficked through this operation every other month. Sunday characterized the enterprise as an ‘upper-level trafficking organization’ in a news conference.
Sunday explained, ‘This was a very sophisticated endeavor. This wasn’t a case of a few college kids sharing drugs.’ He emphasized the operation’s serious and organized nature during an interview on ‘The Story.’
In response, authorities charged fourteen individuals, including current and former Penn State students, with felonies or misdemeanors related to activities between 2023 and 2024. Prosecutors identified Agostino Abbatiello, 24, and Thomas Robinson, 23, as the alleged leaders of the operation. Both reportedly made frequent trips to Philadelphia and New York to obtain significant quantities of cocaine, conducted transactions via Snapchat, and processed payments through Venmo.
Expressing concern, Sunday stated, ‘As attorney general, I am deeply troubled when organizations like this operate unchallenged.’ He highlighted claims that pledges at Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternities were allegedly instructed to cut and package cocaine as part of their initiation. Sunday pointed to peer pressure as a strong motivator, noting its significant impact on young individuals.
These allegations emerge nearly ten years after another fraternity-related incident brought scrutiny to Penn State. In 2017, a hazing incident at Beta Theta Pi fraternity led to the tragic death of 19-year-old Tim Piazza.
Penn State expressed shock over the recent accusations. It placed Delta Upsilon under interim suspension, while clarifying that Sigma Chi is not recognized by the university since the fraternity operates independently.
Attorney General Sunday conveyed hope that Penn State will respond appropriately to these circumstances. ‘The university has been open to collaboration so far,’ he noted, expressing optimism for future cooperative efforts to address the issues.
