Coco Gauff and Williams Sisters Highlight Wimbledon Tennis Excitement
In July 2019, Coco Gauff, then 15, made headlines by defeating Venus Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, during the first round at Wimbledon. Gauff repeated her triumph over Venus at the Australian Open in January 2020.
By July 2021, Gauff teamed up with Venus Williams for doubles, though they were ousted in the first round at Roland-Garros. Despite being alongside her childhood idols, the proximity has not diminished Gauff’s admiration for Venus and Serena Williams.
Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, returned to professional tennis after almost four years away. Gauff expressed her continued admiration at her Wimbledon press conference, stating, “I played the sport because of them, believed that I could do things because of them, and I still look up to them a lot. Even when I play them, I’m still admiring. I think that’s the only time that’s happened to me in this sport.”
This week, for the first time since the 2022 US Open, Serena and Venus Williams will unite in doubles competition at Wimbledon. They will face Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra in the first round on Thursday, July 2. Serena and Venus have captured six Wimbledon doubles titles together.
Serena will also participate in singles matches, starting with a face-off against Maya Joint, 20, on Tuesday, June 30. Serena boasts seven Wimbledon singles championships.
Gauff has yet to compete against Serena Williams, though a chance might arise should Serena continue her tennis journey post-Wimbledon. Serena stated the desire to partner with Coco, remarking, “I would really love to play with Coco. To be honest, she was on my list of people that I would love to play with.”
This admiration extends towards players she partners with, including Karolina Muchova, who Serena spoke highly of after their match in Berlin.
Coco Gauff, currently ranked No. 7 in singles, continues her quest for a Wimbledon title, beginning with a first-round match against No. 78 Tamara Korpatsch on Monday, June 29.
