Coco Gauff Supports Fair Play and Transgender Inclusion in Tennis

American tennis player Coco Gauff recently shared her views on the Women’s Tennis Association’s (WTA) policy regarding SRY gene testing. This policy aims to maintain fair competition by limiting the participation of biological males in women’s tennis.

While Gauff supports the intent behind the policy, she emphasized her commitment to the transgender community. She stated, “I understand the reasoning behind it.” However, she expressed concern over the animosity such conversations might bring toward the trans community. Gauff believes in protecting biological differences while preserving fairness in women’s sports.

I guess I agree with trying to protect the fairness in women’s sports. But I also do not like the attack it creates for people using this to target the trans community.

Gauff’s comments came after her victory over Kayla Day in the first round of the National Open in Toronto. Her stance follows similar support expressed by Aryna Sabalenka, the No. 1 women’s tennis player. Sabalenka remarked, “It’s really important to keep fairness in our tour. Men are biologically stronger than women, making it unfair for women to compete against biological men.”

The WTA’s updated policy requires players to undergo a screening test for the SRY gene, located on the Y chromosome. This gene is involved in male sex development. Testing can be done through methods like cheek swabs, blood tests, or saliva samples. Players testing negative for the SRY gene can compete on the WTA Tour. Those testing positive will undergo further medical assessment before clearance.

Players must acknowledge that declining to undergo such testing can lead to disciplinary measures. The WTA’s policy aims to ensure equal athletic opportunities and fair competition for all participants in its tournaments.

The policy was developed after consultation with WTA members and reviewing evolving eligibility standards in international women’s sports.
