Supporters showed strong enthusiasm at a rally for Abelardo de la Espriella, a prominent candidate in Colombia’s presidential election. Known for his confrontational style, De La Espriella is both a successful criminal lawyer and a political outsider. He emphasizes his lack of political ties and experience as an asset, arguing that entrepreneurs, unlike politicians, keep their promises.
De La Espriella advocates for a shift to the right after four years under President Gustavo Petro, who cannot seek reelection. His campaign promises focus on ending peace talks with guerrilla groups and establishing 10 “mega-prisons” to combat crime and instability. This approach has drawn comparisons to the authoritarian leadership of Nayib Bukele in El Salvador.
Bukele’s administration has been notable for its aggressive crime-fighting measures which resulted in a significant portion of the population being incarcerated. De La Espriella shares physical and ideological similarities with Bukele, appealing to voters seeking change in Colombia.
The rise of right-wing politics in Latin America is seen in the current governments of countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, and El Salvador. De La Espriella’s potential victory could add Colombia to this list, especially with right-wing figures Keiko Fujimori and Flavio Bolsonaro also seeking office in the region.
De La Espriella gained wealth and recognition from his legal work with high-profile, controversial clients. These include a pyramid scheme founder and a businessman extradited to the U.S. for money laundering. His lavish lifestyle, featuring luxury cars and private jets, further boosts his image as a successful outsider to traditional politics.
Colombian analyst Sandra Borda notes that De La Espriella’s flamboyant personality attracts many ordinary Colombians. However, his inappropriate remarks and dismissive attitude toward journalists and critics may alienate some voters.
Iván Cepeda is De La Espriella’s main opponent. A left-wing senator, Cepeda is closely associated with President Petro and has an austere lifestyle. He advocates for continuing Petro’s policies, with a focus on integrating indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities and promoting peace.
Critics argue Cepeda’s peace initiatives have faltered, giving criminal groups more power. As the Petro administration attempted ceasefires, these groups expanded, leading to increased violence in rural regions. With more armed fighters active, some Colombians favor a tougher approach like De La Espriella’s.
Despite Cepeda leading in polls, his inability to secure more than half the votes may lead to a runoff if no candidate wins outright. Second place might be De La Espriella, but right-wing Senator Paloma Valencia could pose a challenge. Valencia, aiming to be Colombia’s first female president, criticizes De La Espriella’s methods while positioning herself as a mainstream conservative alternative.
As the June 21 potential runoff approaches, Colombia faces a choice between continued peace efforts and a radical shift toward hardline security measures. The results will significantly impact the nation’s political direction.
