Colonel Sanders’ Disapproval of KFC’s Gravy
Colonel Harland Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, expressed strong opinions about the changes to the menu items after selling the fast-food chain to investors in 1964. Despite staying as the public face of KFC, Sanders often criticized alterations to the restaurant’s offerings, particularly its gravy.
Gravy Criticism
In a 1978 interview with the Courier-Journal, Sanders harshly criticized the gravy, describing it as comparable to “wallpaper paste”. He believed the gravy no longer matched the original recipe’s quality, lacking both taste and nutritional value.
Sanders said, “They buy tap water for 15 to 20 cents per 1,000 gallons, and then mix it with flour and starch,” suggesting the gravy had become subpar in both flavor and nutrition.
Legal Controversy
Sanders’ comments led to a controversy, culminating in a lawsuit filed by a KFC franchise in Bowling Green, Kentucky, against Sanders and the newspaper. The Kentucky Supreme Court eventually dismissed the case, ruling that Sanders’ remarks targeted KFC as a whole, not any specific franchise.
Loyal Following
Despite Sanders’ critical view, KFC’s gravy has maintained a dedicated fan base over the years. On platforms like Reddit, fans have voiced their support, some noting comfort in the current recipe. Discussions have also emerged about the differences between the old and new recipes.
Some enthusiasts shared that the original gravy might have included ingredients like chicken cracklings and milk, offering a richer flavor than today’s version. Home cooks often share their recipes and tips for recreating the classic taste in their kitchens.
Despite the criticisms, the gravy remains a beloved item on KFC’s menu, showcasing that tastes and opinions can vary widely.
