Colorado Candidate Melat Kiros Advocates for Change in U.S. Representation

In a recent event in Denver, Colorado, Melat Kiros, a socialist candidate, expressed her desire to see more immigrants with backgrounds from the global south involved in U.S. politics. She aims to challenge what she describes as the ‘exploitative and extractive’ nature of the United States. Kiros participated in the Wa’Ela Tigrai event where she discussed her campaign’s progress after her victory against incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in a Democratic primary.

Drawing inspiration from the House ‘Squad,’ including figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Kiros highlighted the need for diverse representation in government to facilitate change in the global world order. She emphasized the urgency of having leaders who fundamentally grasp American exploitation on a global scale.

“There’s a certain reckoning that we are going to have to have with the global world order as it exists today,” Kiros stated during the event. She asserts that more understanding is required of America’s role globally, which she believes will only come with diverse representation.

As an advocate endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, Kiros gained attention with her primary election win, alongside similar candidates defeating Democratic incumbents. Her views reflect a strong anti-capitalist sentiment, grounded in her legal career experiences.

Kiros shared her disillusionment from her time in law school, explaining that her experiences led her to believe that the system functions as intended, which disheartened her. However, she found the strength to fight for change, inspired by the spirit of her community.

“Regardless of what ends up happening with my own candidacy,… I would rather go down fighting than to give up,” said Kiros, reaffirming her commitment to her political journey.

In her past, Kiros faced professional repercussions for speaking out against law firms’ responses to antisemitism, leading to her dismissal from Sidley Austin in 2023. Despite these challenges, she maintains a focus on advancing her political ideals.
