Colorado Governor Faces Backlash Over Legal Decision
The Colorado State Democratic Party expressed significant disapproval of Governor Jared Polis on Wednesday following his decision to release Tina Peters from prison. This move has been met with substantial criticism from Democratic voters.
Governor Polis, a Democrat, faced the censure due to his decision to commute the prison sentence of Tina Peters, an election denier. Ms. Peters had been serving a nine-year sentence for tampering with voting machines. The decision has angered many within his party.
The censure resolution was supported by a large grassroots movement comprising over 700 Democrats who opposed Governor Polis’s actions. During the state party central committee meeting, 89.8 percent voted in favor of the censure.
Tina Peters, once in charge of voting machines, aimed to prove alleged manipulation in the 2020 election. Many Democratic leaders in Colorado, alongside some Republicans, urged Governor Polis to deny clemency for Peters. They argued that despite her being a first-time offender at 70 years of age, she remained a threat to the electoral process due to her lack of remorse.
Governor Polis defended his decision by suggesting the sentence was excessive, influenced by her conspiracy theory beliefs. Eric Maruyama, Polis’s spokesperson, commented that the governor was committed to doing what he believed right, even if unpopular.
