Community Initiative Tackles Gun Violence and Promotes Safety in Aurora

An initiative aimed at reducing gun violence, fostering community connections, and enhancing neighborhood wellness was highlighted during an event at the Bardwell Residences, Aurora. The four-hour event, named Lighting the Way to a Safer Aurora, was organized by Project Safe Aurora, as noted by the Kane County Health Department, which leads the coalition.

The event featured live music, free giveaways such as Chromebooks, gas cards, and biometric gun safes, and presentations from guests discussing safety. Elizabeth Nunez, the violence prevention specialist for the Kane County Health Department, emphasized its significance. She stated, This is part of community health. Gun violence affects the whole community. Through this event and our coalition, we aim to build community trust, increase awareness of available resources, and promote safe gun storage.

The program was initially funded by a state grant via the Reimagine Public Safety Act. Nunez explained that areas with high gun violence concentrations were selected to build a coalition grounded in community-driven data, voices, and innovative strategies specific to each community to prevent violence.

Over the years, the coalition expanded to over 27 different organizations, including law enforcement, domestic violence entities, and youth development groups. These organizations collaborate to discuss violence prevention.

Nunez mentioned she actively engaged with different neighborhood groups this year to raise awareness of Project Safe Aurora, also leading to a community safety action plan. She highlighted three key strategies developed from data analyzed from the Aurora police transparency hub and incident reports. The data revealed most violence stems from Aurora’s East Side, primarily involving the 14-24 age group.

In response, Project Safe Aurora partnered with the East Aurora School District to implement a restorative practice program. This framework focuses on how schools and administrators interact to build trust.

Aurora Alderman Jonathan Nunez, representing the 4th Ward, was present at the event and noted the importance of months of work by Elizabeth Nunez and the Kane County Health Department. A conversation last fall about shooting data in Aurora, showing a concentration of incidents, led to this initiative, he said.

Ilda Valdez of Aurora attended the event, expressing interest in learning about the project. She remarked, This isn’t widely discussed, and raising community awareness is crucial for encouraging more people to engage. I came to understand the issues around gun control.
