Comparison of Trump’s Iran Standoff with Nixon’s Vietnam Strategy
A former general has drawn parallels between President Donald Trump’s recent actions with Iran and a historic military campaign from the Vietnam War era. On the show ‘Hannity,’ Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg discussed Trump’s use of ‘kinetic strikes’ and strong threats that have seemingly brought Iran back to the negotiating table this week.
Kellogg indicated that these actions are not unprecedented, referencing President Richard Nixon’s 1972 ‘Linebacker II’ bombing campaign. This operation played a crucial role in pushing North Vietnam back into peace negotiations.
The bombing that he took, the kinetic strikes, actually brought the Iranians to the table. It’s not the first time we’ve ever done that.
The ‘Linebacker II’ campaign broke stalemates in Vietnam talks by unleashing B-52 bombers over strategic targets such as Hanoi and Haiphong. This campaign lasted nearly two weeks and occurred around the Christmas period.
Recently, the U.S. undertook attacks in Iran, reacting to Iran shooting down an American Apache helicopter. President Trump mentioned canceling further strikes due to advancements toward a peace deal with Iran.
Kellogg noted Trump’s strategy resembles that of the Nixon era. He emphasized Trump’s determination in achieving his goal of dismantling Tehran’s nuclear program. Kellogg highlighted the urgency, pointing out Iran’s increasing uranium enrichment levels to high percentages, which he viewed as a potential threat.
Kellogg stressed the long-term impact of any change in the Middle East’s dynamics, urging vigilance for future generations.
Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced an imminent U.S.-Iran peace deal, acknowledging Pakistan’s role as a mediator in the negotiations. This potential agreement is expected to be finalized soon, with an electronic signing followed by technical discussions next week.
Sharif expressed gratitude towards the United States, Iran, and regional allies, hopeful that the forthcoming deal will lay the groundwork for enduring peace.
