Progressive candidate Iván Cepeda conceded Colombia’s presidential election on Wednesday to Abelardo de la Espriella, a conservative candidate endorsed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Election results revealed de la Espriella, a businessman and lawyer inexperienced in politics, defeated Cepeda, a lawmaker, by 1 percentage point, accounting for nearly 251,000 votes.
Cepeda addressed the nation, stating, “We assume with serenity, responsibility, and absolute resolve — and let there be no doubt about it — the role that circumstances demand of us. We will exercise a democratic, vigilant and constructive opposition.” This announcement confirmed their acceptance of the electoral outcome.
The election reflected a disapproval of outgoing President Gustavo Petro’s administration. Cepeda had pledged to continue Petro’s policies, including efforts to communicate with various armed groups under the “total peace” initiative, which largely did not succeed.
Electoral authorities shared almost the complete vote count hours after the polls closed on Sunday. Petro and Cepeda initially did not accept these results. Cepeda indicated he would wait for a recount before acknowledging the final outcome.
