Controversial Renovations at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Face Ongoing Challenges
New images from Newsweek reveal noticeable damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool as contractors continue to work on President Donald Trump’s contentious renovation project. The photos show parts of the pool’s bottom appearing peeled and patched, while workers remain on site.
Causes of Damage
The images come weeks after federal prosecutors stated that flaws in the pool’s installation, not vandalism, caused much of the damage. The situation ignited a significant political dispute. Despite this, the Trump administration had reopened the site hurriedly for the July Fourth celebrations. President Trump has argued that vandalism played a role but also admitted that “some contractor error” was involved. Court filings and federal prosecutors described the peeling as stemming from improper installation, resulting in dropped charges against former Olympian David Hearn, who previously faced accusations of damaging the pool.
When contacted, the White House directed Newsweek to the National Park Service. Newsweek reached the agency through an online contact form for comments.
Renovation Goals
President Trump aimed to restore the Reflecting Pool to a cleaner and more visually appealing condition. The renovation included applying a new blue coating known as “American flag blue” and tackling persistent algae blooms.
The project faced setbacks quickly. Algae soon returned, turning the water murky and green despite treatments aimed at clearing it. Officials applied hydrogen peroxide and nanobubble ozone technology to combat algae at the pool’s bottom.
Trump also alleged that vandals caused significant damage to the new blue liner, a claim central to the controversy. Critics speculated that Trump might have caused the damage himself by driving his motorcade over the newly finished section.
Originally described as a low-cost, fast project, the renovation evolved into an effort costing over $15 million.
Images Document Damage
Photos from Newsweek, taken on Tuesday, offer a fresh view of the project as repairs continue. Crews remain focused on restoring this iconic Washington landmark.
Peeling Reflecting Pool Liner
The Reflecting Pool has faced numerous issues since its renovation, such as extensive algae growth and sections of the new blue coating peeling from the pool floor and walls. This peeling emerged shortly after the project concluded, raising questions about the coating’s adhesion during installation. Though officials have cited vandalism for some damage, federal prosecutors attribute the peeling to faulty installation. Repair efforts continue as scrutiny persists over the project’s cost and longevity.
On Tuesday, according to Newsweek’s photos, the peeling was still apparent. Construction crews were present, focusing on repairs.
Dead Grass on National Mall
Renovations have also highlighted patches of dead and discolored grass on parts of the National Mall, near Trump’s Fourth of July celebration site. The precise causes remain unidentified, but Trump alluded to potential vandalism.
These patches of grass were still visible on Tuesday.
Other Projects Highlighted
On Tuesday, Trump showcased another project in Washington, D.C., on Truth Social. “The Restoration of the Thomas Jefferson Columns at the White House — The work turned out beautifully!” Trump posted, accompanying a picture of the newly painted columns.
In a separate Truth Social post on Tuesday, Trump shared a focus on efforts to enhance Washington, D.C., listing projects such as fixing lights, rehabilitating benches, clearing homeless encampments, cleaning statues, and repainting fences.
Future Developments
Work on the Reflecting Pool and surrounding area continues as officials work through problems emerging from the renovation. Though an exact reopening date is unclear, Trump promised on Truth Social earlier this month that the site will “reopen shortly.” Success will depend on resolving the challenges that have marred the multimillion-dollar project.
