Graham Platner, a Democratic Senate hopeful from Maine, faces serious allegations from multiple former partners. These claims include unsettling behavior, problematic tattoos, and inappropriate communications.
Ex-girlfriends have come forward detailing incidents involving Platner’s supposed interest in violent and inappropriate fantasies, extensive drinking, and aggressive actions. The New York Times reported on allegations of Platner joking about his Totenkopf tattoo, which he claimed represented a connection to the Schutzstaffel, known for its violent history. This narrative conflicts with his previous claims of ignorance regarding the tattoo’s Nazi associations.
“If anybody ever broke in here, I would rape them,” alleged ex-girlfriend Lyndsey Fifield recalled Platner saying, which she interpreted as a claim of dominance rather than a sexual act.
Another incident involved Platner allegedly pulling Fifield from a taxi during a dispute. Fifield shared claims that Platner kept an ax and an AR-15, despite D.C. regulations against the firearm, adding to her concerns about his demeanor.
Platner addressed these issues, acknowledging struggles with PTSD, self-medicating with alcohol, and recognizing personal failings. He expressed regret but also accused political motivations behind the accusations. He highlighted his efforts to improve and engage with the community.
Jenny Racicot, another former partner, cited offensive Reddit posts as a reason for viewing Platner negatively regarding his treatment of women. A third unnamed ex-girlfriend mentioned his heavy drinking and disruptive behavior, describing her involvement as seemingly collateral in his chaotic life.
The Republican National Committee voiced concerns about Platner’s behavior and questioned Democratic support. The controversy has prompted his wife, Amy Gertner, to publicly defend him, although she did not dispute claims of infidelity.
Platner’s campaign centers on progressive economic policies such as increased taxes on billionaires and tax relief for the working class. Yet, the scandals surrounding him have led to criticism from both sides of the political spectrum. As the election approaches, the Democratic Party faces pressure to address Platner’s actions and character issues.
