Controversy Erupts at Portland Thorns Game Over ‘Save Women’s Sports’ Demonstration
During a National Women’s Soccer League match at Providence Park, a small group of demonstrators wearing XX-XY Athletics shirts and holding ‘Save Women’s Sports’ signs faced backlash. This prompted security to remove the group from the premises after physical and verbal confrontations ensued.
Julie Lane, a Bay Area resident, was deeply involved in the incident. Following the tumultuous encounter at the game, Lane and three companions attempted to return to their hotel via a Lyft ride. However, the situation intensified when the driver recognized them from news coverage.
Initially, Linda Serbu, one of the women, believed the driver was sympathetic. Upon confirming their appearance in the news, the driver abruptly stopped, demanding they exit the vehicle. He insisted on his right to cancel any ride, citing their political stance and attire as grounds for removal.
Lane explained her refusal to leave due to two primary concerns. Firstly, she had paid for the ride and didn’t understand the rationale for their ejection. Secondly, the location was dimly lit and isolated, causing her to feel unsafe.
The driver threatened to call the police, which Lane welcomed, although law enforcement did not arrive before they left. The group eventually secured an Uber to reach their destination, while Lane simultaneously reported the incident to Lyft support. Surprisingly, her account was deactivated the next morning.
A Lyft spokesperson emphasized the platform’s commitment to safety and non-discrimination, confirming an ongoing review of the incident involving both the rider and the driver.
City regulations in Portland might also have been violated, as they prohibit rideshare drivers from refusing service to passengers of ‘proper demeanor’ within the city limits.
Comments from the driver on Reddit showed little regret. He criticized the delayed removal of the ‘Save Women’s Sports’ group from the stadium, urging better protection for LGBTQ+ fans.
Serbu noted the irony in his statements, highlighting that their group consisted of two lesbians and two bisexual women. The hostility continued even after their exit from the stadium, with ongoing confrontations from Thorns fans.
