Controversy Erupts at Youth Baseball Tournament
The travel baseball community experienced a shocking incident during the Memorial Day weekend. An 11U tournament in Kansas City became the center of attention due to allegations involving a coach from Oklahoma and accusations from a Nebraska coach, Brandon Magni.
Magni shared his account on Facebook, claiming that during a game, the Oklahoma coach, Mychal Ryals, instructed his pitcher to hit a player, Easton, on the opposing team. When Easton informed the umpire, the coach allegedly instructed the pitcher to throw the ball at the Nebraska team’s dugout instead. Magni reported that a 70 mph fastball was then hurled into his dugout, hitting one of his players.
The incident stirred heated debates within the tournament, held by the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA), over the holiday weekend. Allegations also surfaced about the actions of the tournament’s officials. Magni claimed that although the pitcher was ejected from the game, he could remain in the dugout, and the Oklahoma coach faced no disciplinary action.
In response to the situation, Magni expressed frustration towards USSSA Baseball, urging for better management. He mentioned that despite the incident, his team chose to handle the situation with dignity, focusing on their sportsmanship and composure. He also noted opposing advice from officials when he requested the Oklahoma team forfeit, suggesting he either concede the game or contact law enforcement.
In the aftermath, a player’s mother described the atmosphere leading up to the event as charged. She stated that the game was tightly contested, with players cheering energetically, which escalated tensions.
