President Donald Trump is facing criticism for displaying photos of himself with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping in the White House. MS NOW journalist Jacqueline Alemany shared images of the framed photographs positioned near the White House’s Palm Room doors. The online backlash followed swiftly, with a Republican strategist labeling the act “an insult to Democratic values,” while an anti-Trump group questioned why “communist authoritarians” are featured in gilded frames in the White House.
In January, Trump faced similar scrutiny when a PBS News White House correspondent revealed an image of him with Putin. The White House responded to Newsweek that showcasing snapshots of Trump’s public meetings and events are commonplace. An official stated that there are “photos of several other instances when President Trump met with world leaders.” On Friday, Newsweek contacted the White House again for comment.
What Do the Photos Show?
Alemany noted in her post that the photos were hung beside the Palm Room doors, which connect the West Wing to the residence. The photo with Putin seems to have been taken during their summit on August 15, 2025, at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. Trump previously described it as a gift from Putin, but the White House has not confirmed this.
Critics’ Reactions
Many have voiced opposition to the display, citing Russia’s and China’s human rights abuses and ideological differences with the United States. Republican strategist Brittany Martinez stated on X that no U.S. president should display photos of dictators in the White House. Former Biden adviser Yvanna D. Cancela shared the images with a caption expressing disbelief. Media commentator Brian Krassenstein, a frequent Trump critic, remarked sarcastically about the photo of Trump and Putin.
The Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump group co-founded by lawyer George Conway, commented on the photos of Putin and Xi. They questioned why pictures of communist leaders are on display if communism is considered America’s greatest historical threat.
Trump’s Relationship with Putin and Xi
During Trump’s second term, amidst the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and major trade tensions with China, he has sought diplomacy with both leaders. Despite inviting Putin to the G20 conference in Miami, the Kremlin suggested Putin might not attend. Some world leaders view this invitation as an attempt to normalize Russian aggression since Putin’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Last August, Trump hosted Putin with a red carpet welcome and military flyover in Alaska. He described the summit as a great meeting aimed at resolving the conflict involving Ukraine. Trump also engaged with China, meeting Xi in Washington in September after a visit to China in May. Trump seemingly seeks Xi’s assistance in resolving conflicts involving Chinese allies Russia and Iran and aims to secure new trade deals.
At a State Dinner during Xi’s visit, Trump gifted him a statue of a bald eagle, representing America’s national symbol. Trump expressed optimism about building a relationship that promotes prosperity and security for future generations.
