The casting of Meryl Streep as Aslan in Netflix’s adaptation of “Narnia” has ignited criticism among Christian and media circles. Some individuals question the choice of an actress for a role symbolizing Jesus Christ. This controversy led to an online petition demanding Netflix replace director Greta Gerwig for future “Narnia” films.
The petition titled “Demand Netflix to replace director of the Narnia films” emerged on Change.org. It was initiated by Christian fans and critics concerned about theological implications. Aslan, a character in C.S. Lewis’s “The Chronicles of Narnia,” serves as a Christ-like figure. The criticism reflects concerns about altering a character’s perceived authenticity.
“Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew,” directed by Gerwig, adapts the 1955 novel. It is chronologically the first book in the series. The film, set to release in theaters on February 12, 2027, and on Netflix on April 2, 2027, has sparked debate due to Streep’s casting.
Dr. Ted Baehr, founder of Movieguide, expressed his confusion about the casting choice. As a former president of the Episcopal Radio-TV Foundation, he was involved with the 1979 animated “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” He stated, “The change might alienate many Christians who view Aslan as an undiluted allegory for Jesus Christ.” Baehr shared concerns about potentially losing an audience of 110 to 140 million Christians.
Gerwig, identifying as a Unitarian Universalist and churchgoer, expressed her vision for a “rock opera” version. She viewed Streep as someone with gravitas without morose seriousness. Her aim was to find an actor who communicated depth, joy, and delight.
Voice director and producer Ned Lott reflected on casting Aslan for the 2005 film. He emphasized finding a voice aligning with the character’s integrity. Lott’s experience illustrates past considerations of maintaining the author’s vision.
The ongoing controversy underscores differing opinions about preserving literary characters in adaptations. The reception of this casting decision remains closely watched as the film’s release approaches.
