Controversy Surrounds Hasan Piker in Michigan Senate Race
Renowned streamer Hasan Piker has attracted significant criticism from notable Democrats. This comes after he claimed that some Jewish Americans’ allegiance to Israel could worsen antisemitism. Among the critics is Abdul El-Sayed, a candidate for the Michigan Senate. El-Sayed insists that no one else speaks for his campaign.
Piker has actively supported El-Sayed during the Democratic primary. His strong opinions on Israel and U.S. foreign policy, often expressed on Twitch, have sparked division among Democrats in Michigan. The Republican Senate candidate, Mike Rogers, has used this to criticize El-Sayed.
Last week, in a lengthy stream, Piker criticized Jeremy Moss, a Democratic candidate for a Michigan Congressional seat. Moss has withheld his endorsement of El-Sayed, citing a need for outreach to the Jewish community in Oakland County.
Piker argued, “The association between Israel and Zionism, often reiterated by Jewish institutions, promotes the idea that Jews are uniform.” He called this notion “a dangerous form of propaganda.”
And you want to know why? Because people don’t f*** with Israel any longer,
Piker added. He believes that if American Jews continue to link their identity to Israel, they might face repercussions not directly related to Israel but targeted at them in the U.S.
Following the dissemination of Piker’s remarks, El-Sayed distanced himself. In a statement, he affirmed that only he and his spokespeople speak for the campaign. He also emphasized his commitment to the safety of Jewish people and condemned antisemitism unequivocally.
El-Sayed accused political figures and commentators of focusing the race on a Twitch streamer.
In a press conference, El-Sayed condemned recent hate speech in Michigan. Piker’s comments were not mentioned in his conversation with Fox News’ Jesse Watters.
Rogers accused El-Sayed of insufficiently distancing himself from Piker’s rhetoric, describing it as “a sham statement.” Rogers referred to Piker as El-Sayed’s “running mate” sarcastically.
El-Sayed dismissed these claims, recognizing disagreements with Moss on Israel and foreign policy, but affirmed Jewish community safety remains paramount.
Piker stands by his remarks, claiming he aims to raise awareness about antisemitism instead of promoting it. He posted that he contests the conflation between Zionism and Judaism, which he argues fosters antisemitism.
Responding to criticism, Piker called it “a smear campaign” and “frustrating,” considering it a distraction from substantive issues. He expressed skepticism that people would be satisfied with El-Sayed’s distancing statement.
Piker, with millions of followers on Twitch, has been under scrutiny for controversial remarks, including praise for Hamas over Israel and past comments on 9/11. While he apologized for his 9/11 remark, Piker maintained that his views on Hamas were intentionally provocative.
When questioned about his association with Piker, El-Sayed noted the importance of engaging diverse audiences despite disagreements. He emphasized that public conversation involves differing opinions.
