Controversy Surrounds Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Attendance at 9/11 Ceremony
Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s participation in the 9/11 remembrance at Ground Zero sparked criticism among some city residents. A former police officer suggested the mayor “probably should have skipped it,” while a bereaved individual described his appearance as “disrespectful” and “offensive.” Mamdani’s connections with controversial figures and the appointment of Ramzi Kassem, who previously defended a Guantánamo detainee, have stirred criticism.
Criticism from Public Figures
Prominent figures such as former New York Governor George Pataki and 9/11-era FDNY Commissioner Thomas von Essen urged Mamdani to skip the ceremony. “He showed up anyway. It does bother us,” remarked Walter Matuza, whose father died in the attacks.
Family Petition Against Mamdani
Matuza and other families initiated a petition to prevent Mamdani’s attendance, garnering over 110,000 signatures. Mamdani’s association with streamer Hasan Piker, who once made controversial comments about 9/11, along with Kassem’s appointment, fueled the campaign against him.
Reactions from Attendees
Mike, a former police officer, expressed regret over Mamdani’s attendance, saying he could have managed the situation differently. Some mourners labeled Mamdani with pejorative terms, emphasizing the event should remain apolitical. Attendee Steven from Florida criticized Mamdani’s presence, suggesting it was unwanted.
Despite opposition, some attendees like John recognized Mamdani’s right to attend, provided he maintained respect for the victims. John remembered losing friends at Cantor-Fitzgerald, which suffered significant losses on September 11.
Mamdani’s Perspective
In response, Mamdani expressed love for New York and a desire to focus on families of 9/11 victims and first responders. During the ceremony, he briefly interacted with former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
All living former U.S. presidents were reportedly present at the ceremony, although President Trump attended a Pentagon remembrance before departing for Ireland.
