The Portland Trail Blazers recently made the decision to let go of their newly appointed play-by-play announcer. This decision followed the discovery of past insensitive social media posts. Braiden Bell was set to become the voice for the Blazers until Devon Haskins from KGW News uncovered tweets from Bell dating back to 2012 and 2013. These tweets were deemed racist and misogynistic. At the time of the posts, Bell was just 14 years old.
Craig Carton from OutKick expressed his views on the incident, noting the impact of cancel culture. “This young man landed the job of a lifetime,” Carton remarked, “and immediately someone sought to dig up dirt on him.” While Carton acknowledged the inappropriate nature of the tweets, he emphasized Bell’s age when he wrote them.
“He was a teenager,” Carton noted. “Are we now making lifelong decisions based on teenage posts that were likely meant as jokes among friends?” Carton called for understanding, suggesting that mistakes made in youth shouldn’t permanently define someone’s career.
Carton also advised those aspiring to enter the broadcasting field to carefully monitor and manage their social media profiles. “Clean your social media accounts before applying for jobs,” he urged. “You might have forgotten what you posted when you were younger.” Bell faces these consequences now as a result of not heeding such advice.
