National Parks Conservation Association Speaks Out
Betsy Buffington, Northern Rockies regional director for the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), criticized the idea of constructing a Major League Baseball (MLB) stadium in Grand Teton National Park. This statement follows reports about MLB’s interest in building a baseball field in the park. According to The Washington Post, Deputy Director Frank Lands of the National Park Service visited the park to consider possible locations for the stadium.
Tiernan Sittenfeld, president and CEO of NPCA, expressed her concern in a statement. She emphasized the importance of national parks, noting her personal experiences and lifelong admiration for them. She called for the current administration to focus on funding and staffing for parks rather than pursuing projects that prioritize private profit.
Administration Denies Direct Involvement
Despite the discussions and visits, the White House clarified that the National Park Service has not issued a permit for this endeavor. The administration stated that hosting a game in a national park was proposed by MLB but confirmed this is not a Presidential directive and does not align with the administration’s priorities.
Impact of Trump’s Administration on National Parks
Under President Donald Trump’s leadership, national parks experienced significant changes. Trump’s policies involved increased fees for international visitors, expanded hunting opportunities on federal lands, and proposed reductions in budget and staffing for the parks. The administration’s fiscal 2026 budget suggested $2.1 billion for the National Park Service, a decrease from the previous administration’s allocation.
Additionally, the administration faced criticism for removing or flagging hundreds of exhibits related to important historical topics such as civil rights and women’s suffrage, which raised concerns about censorship.
