The mayor of San Antonio has expressed support for canceling a planned Fourth of July concert by Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West. This follows the cancellation of several of his shows in Europe due to protests over his antisemitic behavior.
The mayor, Gina Ortiz Jones, stated on social media that San Antonio should not host an individual accused of hate speech and antisemitic remarks in a city-funded venue like the Alamodome. She emphasized that standing against antisemitism is essential for achieving a more perfect union.
A representative for Ye declined to comment on the situation. The upcoming Alamodome concert is part of Ye’s tour for his new album, “Bully.” The venue can accommodate over 70,000 fans. Ye has faced criticism for his antisemitic actions, such as releasing a song titled “Heil Hitler” and selling merchandise with swastikas. In 2022, he wrote inflammatory remarks about Jewish people on social media.
Although Ye apologized for his behavior in 2023, he retracted the apology in 2025. In January, he published a full-page apology in The Wall Street Journal, citing untreated bipolar disorder as a factor in his actions. Despite this, many European officials found his apology lacking.
Italian officials recently canceled a July concert due to security concerns and objections from local Jewish leaders. In April, the British government banned Ye from entering the country for concerts because of his antisemitic history. Polish and Swiss authorities also canceled his shows. Ye himself canceled a performance in Marseille, France, after the country’s interior ministry considered prohibiting the event.
Despite the controversies, Ye performed for nearly 40,000 fans in the Netherlands this month, where attendees seemed more focused on his music than his past actions. He also held two sold-out shows at SoFi Stadium near Los Angeles in April.
Ye has further concerts scheduled this summer in Spain, Portugal, and Albania, with an appearance planned in Chicago in September. He is also set to perform in Tampa, Florida, on June 26 and 29.
Florida’s senior senator, Rick Scott, has called for a review of these events. In a letter to the Tampa Sports Authority, Scott expressed concern over using taxpayer-supported facilities for Ye’s concerts, stressing the risk tied to the rapper’s history of “dangerous, hateful rhetoric.”
