Courtney Love has opened up about a health struggle she kept private for years. The singer, known for her role in the band Hole, shared an update about her long-awaited new album. During this time, Love was frequently hospitalized and believed she might not survive.
In an Instagram video, Love said, “I went to England in 2019 and my body just exploded. I was in hospitals a lot. I almost died, I lost all my hair, and weighed about 100 pounds. They told me I was going to die, and I didn’t believe them.”

Love did not publicly identify her exact illness but insisted she ultimately recovered by rejecting the prognosis. She recalled a childhood habit of questioning what adults told her was true.
“When I was a kid…. I used to pattern interrupt the adults,” Love shared. “They’d tell me red was blue. I’d see blue. When they said ‘you’re going to die,’ I didn’t believe them. And somehow, I got better. I’m healthy, which is amazing.”
Love mentioned she was reluctant to go public about her sickness but confirmed she is fine now. Despite the challenges, she worked on her new album while recovering, believing it might be her last. She expressed a desire to return to performing, as music is vital to her well-being.
In an Instagram caption, Love explained, “When I made [the record], I believed this was my last record so I made the record I always wanted to make. I was in the hospital mostly, but when I wasn’t, all I did was write and record it.”
Love thanked those who supported her during this challenging time and expressed gratitude for their work amidst what she described as trauma.
The project represents a significant return for Love, who has not released an album since Hole’s 2010 “Nobody’s Daughter.” She concluded her message by requesting patience from fans as she prepares for a return to public life.
