In Copenhagen, Denmark, following the death of King Harald V, Crown Prince Haakon, age 53, ascended to the throne as King Haakon VIII of Norway. His duties will now include stabilizing the monarchy and improving the royal family’s reputation due to past controversies linked to his wife and stepson.
Haakon’s step into kingship follows his father’s death at 89. Haakon immediately adopted the family motto, “All for Norway,” in honor of his great-grandfather. Queen Mette-Marit now joins him as Norway’s queen, with their eldest child, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, next in line for the throne.
Haakon has substantial experience with royal responsibilities, having served as regent multiple times due to his father’s failing health over recent years. Norway’s monarchy dates back to the ninth century with King Harald Fairhair and was reinstated in 1905 after regaining independence from Sweden. Although largely symbolic now, the royal family plays a vital role in representing the nation globally.
Monarchy’s Historical Roots and Changes
King Haakon is the younger child of King Harald, but being the eldest son, he became the heir when his grandfather, King Olav, died in 1991. In 1990, the Norwegian Constitution was amended to allow firstborn children, regardless of gender, to precede in the line of succession, although this change was not applied retroactively.
King’s Educational and Personal Background
Haakon pursued political science at the University of California, Berkeley, and later, a master’s degree in development studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science, focusing on international trade and Africa. He also completed training at the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy and was part of the Foreign Ministry’s trainee program for diplomats. An enthusiast of surfing, skiing, and music, particularly rock and rap, Haakon has been actively engaged in outdoor activities and attended numerous music festivals across Europe as a young adult.
The Royal Couple’s Story
Haakon’s relationship with Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby began in 1999 at a music festival. Despite knowing challenges awaited, he sought royal approval for their marriage. Mette-Marit had a controversial past as a single mother with connections to legal issues, yet she captured the public’s affection with her approachable demeanor and obvious affection for Haakon. They married in August 2001, enhancing their popularity through a balance of commonality and royal glamour. Together, they have two children and Mette-Marit’s son from a previous relationship, who doesn’t have a royal title.
Royal Family’s Recent Challenges
The royal family’s reputation recently suffered due to Marius Borg Høiby’s rape conviction, bringing intense public scrutiny. Høiby was sentenced to four years in prison in June, impacting the monarchy’s public perception. Alongside these events, Mette-Marit’s associations with Jeffrey Epstein stirred further controversy.
Mette-Marit publicly apologized for these associations, claiming manipulation by Epstein, and she is not facing any accusations. Suffering from a rare chronic illness, she underwent a lung transplant to manage her health condition, which occasionally affects her royal duties.
Amidst the couple’s 50th birthdays in 2023, an interview featured King Haakon showcasing personal family moments, which highlighted his relatable side. Despite ongoing support, evident in surveys like one by Dagbladet, showing 68% favoring the monarchy, challenges remain. A significant decline in public approval from 81% in 2017 to today reflects these issues.
