Cuba’s ambassador to the United Nations, Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, has expressed the country’s openness to altering its economy and government. He also emphasized Cuba’s eagerness to continue negotiations with the United States. However, he indicated skepticism about the sincerity of Washington’s participation in these talks.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Soberón Guzmán stated, “Cuba is willing to talk about everything with the United States. There is no taboo subject in our conversations, on the basis of reciprocity and equality.”
Despite this openness, he noted a lack of trust due to recent statements by President Trump, implying readiness to take over Cuba. According to Soberón Guzmán, such “warmongering rhetoric” undermines dialogue and trust. He pointed out that these comments, which he perceives as building pretexts for potential military action against Cuba, hinder constructive discussions.
This discussion marked the first time in years a current Cuban government official granted an on-record interview to the publication. The government aimed to convey to the American public its desire for peace and cooperation with the U.S., despite the increased pressure from the Trump administration.
