The last day of the regular season on Sunday will clarify the Chicago Cubs’ path as they prepare for the best-of-three wild-card series starting Tuesday. This clarity extends to their pitching strategy for the opening round.
A major decision surrounds right-hander Kevin Gausman. His status for the wild-card series depends on his recovery after a bullpen session scheduled for Sunday at Tropicana Field in Tampa, Fla. Gausman left his last outing in the sixth inning, courtesy of a left shoulder injury. This injury occurred while executing a diving tag on a Miami Marlins runner, which resulted in shoulder weakness. Notably, Gausman had dislocated this shoulder in high school.
As of Friday, there had been no imaging tests on his shoulder, according to manager Craig Counsell. While Gausman was able to play catch, soreness persisted. “We’ve got to keep monitoring that,” Counsell remarked, emphasizing Sunday as a critical day to assess Gausman’s condition.
“Focus on how we’re going to get 27 outs, not just who’s starting,” Counsell stated regarding their pitching plans. Gausman’s recent performance has been inconsistent, yet he’s completed six innings in his last two starts, allowing two runs each time. His experience, particularly from a World Series run with the Toronto Blue Jays last year, is an asset for the Cubs.
The next two days are pretty important to get back to some normalcy…
Gausman expressed hesitance about being ready for the playoffs. He cited the importance of his nonthrowing shoulder for the fluidity of his delivery, noting the need for balance and leverage. Regardless of the outcome, Gausman is committed to preparing as much as possible.
In the event Gausman is unavailable, either fully or for Game 1, the Cubs might turn to left-hander Matthew Boyd. Shota Imanaga is another potential alternative, contingent on his use in the regular-season finale. Also in consideration is right-hander Clay Holmes, who might pitch in Game 2 on Wednesday or Game 3 on Thursday if required. Left-hander David Peterson is performing well and could play a key role, even from the bullpen.
The Cubs anticipate various rotational scenarios. David Peterson commented, “It’s a good problem to face tough choices. Our task is to deliver on the field and start strong, ensuring all hands are on deck.”
