The Chicago Cubs faced a challenging evening on their quest for the National League’s top wild-card position. Their 6-4 defeat to the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park was marked by numerous missed opportunities and errors in all areas of the game.
In a crucial moment during the ninth inning, the Cubs attempted a rally. Michael Busch walked with one out, bringing the tying run to the plate in Alex Bregman. Bregman managed a deep 383-foot flyout, narrowly missing a chance to even the score. Ian Happ had his own near-miss when he sent a 107.9 mph fastball just foul near the right-field pole. Busch, not being held on first base, ran on the pitch and the subsequent pitch. Reds catcher Jose Trevino anticipated this and called for a pitchout which resulted in Busch originally being called safe at second. However, a review overturned the call, ending the game.
Manager Craig Counsell addressed Busch’s error directly. “That was a dumb play,” Counsell commented. “It was stupid. I’ll take responsibility for it.” Busch accepted blame for his mistake. “It’s inexcusable on my part. I need to be sure I can make that base 100%,” he reflected.
Throughout the game, the Cubs (85-69) struggled to convert their scoring chances, leaving nine runners stranded and finishing with a 2-for-10 performance in scoring positions. The lower part of their lineup, including Happ, Nico Hoerner, Michael Conforto, Carson Kelly, and Dansby Swanson, contributed significantly to the offense with eight hits and additional walks and hits by pitch. Swanson returned from an oblique strain and went 1-for-3, adding a walk and run.
Pete Crow-Armstrong faced a challenging night offensively, recording 0-for-5 with three strikeouts while leaving nine runners on base. Bregman also failed to secure a hit in his five at-bats.
Seiya Suzuki, battling offensive struggles, managed a go-ahead two-run single in the fourth but also struck out thrice, including a bases-loaded situation against Reds starter Chase Burns. “We had good opportunities,” Counsell noted. “We had the right guys up, but the hits weren’t there for us tonight.”
Clay Holmes’ pitching challenges further hindered the Cubs. He walked five over 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on three hits. His throwing error during a pickoff contributed to a decisive three-run inning. Holmes reflected, “Walking the leadoff guy in the sixth was costly. It’s something I need to improve on, especially near the end of outings.”
With the Arizona Diamondbacks losing Friday, the Cubs’ magic number for a playoff spot decreased to three. However, they need momentum with eight games remaining. Philadelphia Phillies’ loss offered some relief, although the San Diego Padres’ victory created a three-way tie at the wild-card standings.
Carson Kelly emphasized the importance of handling each game individually. “Winning towards the playoffs is crucial. What makes this team strong is handling every day as a new opportunity, reflecting the importance of games since April,” Kelly stated.
