Cubs’ Recent Success Hinges on Unheralded Players

The Chicago Cubs roster is currently under intense scrutiny. With the MLB trade deadline looming at 5 p.m. on Monday, the decisions made by president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer and his front office are on every Cubs fan’s mind. However, their recent 5-2 victory over the New York Yankees at Wrigley Field highlighted the importance of less-celebrated players.

Nico Hoerner and Pete Crow-Armstrong Shine

Nico Hoerner tied the game with his solo home run in the seventh inning. Pete Crow-Armstrong added a go-ahead triple in the same inning. But it was David Peterson and Pedro Ramírez, who only joined the team this season, that helped secure the win.

“It’s a time of year when we definitely need everybody involved, and having guys like Pedro that are versatile and are playing well is really important,” Hoerner stated post-game.

Ramírez’s walk in the seventh inning was pivotal. His plate discipline gave Crow-Armstrong a chance to bat. Cubs manager Craig Counsell noted, “It’s two outs, nobody on base, you think, ‘Oh, it’s whatever,’ but it gets Pete up there, who knows what can happen? So it’s a big at-bat and ultimately, it’s the difference in the game.” Crow-Armstrong capitalized with a crucial triple.

Pedro Ramírez’s Impact

Ramírez’s presence is significant during a taxing stretch of 17 games without a break. The rookie, just 22, provides versatility off the bench, playing multiple infield positions. His ability to adapt is invaluable to Counsell, especially when resting starters like Hoerner or Alex Bregman.

During their current streak, the Cubs secured their ninth consecutive win, further showcasing Ramírez’s importance. His performances offer relief and flexibility in the lineup.

David Peterson’s Contribution

David Peterson impressed with eight strikeouts, allowing only one earned run in 6 1/3 innings. His performance includes a season-high in whiffs, a stat he hasn’t surpassed since joining the Cubs.

“I felt really good in my mechanics and just felt like I could execute. That was the biggest thing, being able to put pitches where we wanted them and get the ground balls,” Peterson explained.

Since his acquisition from the New York Mets in June, Peterson has a 4.36 ERA with the Cubs, which would be lower without a 10-run mishap early on. In his last four starts, he boasts an impressive 1.52 ERA.

“He was excellent,” Counsell remarked. “Getting into the seventh inning is really important for where we’re at right now.”
