Alex Bregman began August without any three-home-run games in his baseball career. Yet, by month’s end, he had added two such performances to his name. Bregman delivered his latest three-home-run game in a powerful display on Monday night, as the Cubs wrapped up August with impressive offensive firepower.
The Chicago Cubs set a franchise record by hitting nine home runs in a dominant 17-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. This achievement capped off a month in which the Cubs hit 62 home runs, placing them second in MLB history for most homers in a single month, behind the 2019 New York Yankees who hit 74 in April. The Cubs’ total also set a new National League record.
Bregman joined an exclusive group of Cubs players with multiple three-home-run games in a season, including Aramis Ramírez, Sammy Sosa, and Dave Kingman. Commenting on consistent performance, Bregman said, “The quality of at-bat in the second half has been super consistent up and down the lineup, and it’s been tough on opposing teams.”
The Cubs, sporting a 78-60 record, took advantage of Brewers starter Kyle Harrison’s fastball early. They scored their first seven runs off Harrison’s pitches, building a commanding 9-0 lead by the fourth inning. Contributions from Tyrone Taylor, Nico Hoerner, and Carson Kelly provided starter Clay Holmes with a secure four-run lead during the first inning. Bregman and Seiya Suzuki added to the scoring in subsequent innings.
Brewers’ Andrew Vaughn was called upon to pitch the final two innings but struggled, as the Cubs scored seven runs, including three homers. Cubs’ pitcher Holmes maintained control, completing six shutout innings with five hits, two walks, and eight strikeouts. Despite challenging weather conditions affecting grip, Holmes effectively used his sinker to achieve 11 called strikes and two strikeouts. In his recent four starts, Holmes has allowed only one run across 25 innings, boasting a 0.36 ERA.
Bregman and Pete Crow-Armstrong, the NL MVP front-runner, reached significant milestones together, becoming the first MLB teammates since Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle in 1961 to combine for at least 25 home runs, 25 walks, 50 RBIs, and 50 runs scored in a month. They are also the first Cubs teammates to hit at least 12 homers each in a month, matching a feat not seen since 1999.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell praised Bregman’s dedication, stating, “In his preparation and in the daily grind, he’s just relentless.” The team faces a pivotal 10-day period to determine their competitiveness for an NL Central title, with upcoming games against the Brewers.
Despite impressive home run numbers, the Cubs finished August with a 16-12 record. Although they remain seven games behind the Brewers, who are pacing for a remarkable season, Counsell emphasized the importance of focusing on their own performance and not underestimating their opponents.
With playoff positioning in mind, Counsell ensured the team’s readiness to compete regardless of location, saying, “We want to play at home, are we going to shy away from a challenge on the road? Nope.” The Cubs, facing a challenging schedule, remain determined to secure their place in postseason play.
