Current Developments in the Iran Conflict
Recent reports indicate a decline in the number of vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz. According to Reuters, vessel traffic in the strategic strait has dropped to a one-week low of eight. Before the conflict began on February 28, around 130 ships transited daily. This significant reduction reflects the impact of the ongoing war on shipping activities.
Incident Involving Houthi Rebels in the Red Sea
Yemen’s coast guard reported a tragic incident involving Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the Red Sea. Six people on a vessel lost their lives due to an attack carried out by the rebels. This marks the first instance of fatalities on cargo ships in the area since the resurgence of conflict in Yemen. The attack occurred in the Bab el-Mandeb strait. It coincided with other Houthi assaults on Yemen’s government-controlled port city of Mokha and other regions, causing numerous casualties among government forces and civilians.
The escalation by the Houthis extends beyond Yemen, as they have also targeted oil facilities in Saudi Arabia, which backs the Yemeni government. These actions threaten to reignite Yemen’s civil war and could open a new front in the Middle East conflict. Mohammed Abdul-Salam, a senior Houthi figure, accused Saudi Arabia of taking advantage of the ceasefire to intensify the blockade that began in 2015. He expressed a willingness for negotiations but emphasized that lifting the blockade is crucial for any agreement.
U.S. Military Actions Against Vessels Breaching Blockade
The U.S. military has engaged in actions to enforce its blockade on Iranian ports. U.S. Central Command reported that after a Panama-flagged vessel attempted to defy the blockade, an American military helicopter fired on it. The MH-60 helicopter launched two Hellfire missiles into the engine room of the Vela Nova, effectively halting its course. The crew reportedly ignored several warnings from U.S. forces while attempting to navigate the Gulf of Oman.
U.S. Central Command noted that its blockade remains active. Thus far, it has disabled three non-compliant vessels, boarded two, and redirected 55 commercial ships that attempted to breach the blockade.
