The Dallas Cowboys made significant changes to their defense during the offseason, focusing particularly on enhancing their pass-rushing capabilities. They acquired Pro Bowler Rashan Gary through trade, signed former All-Pro Von Miller, and selected Malachi Lawrence and Jaishawn Barham in the draft. These moves may render some of the existing defensive ends, including Sam Williams, potentially expendable.
Gary Davenport from Bleacher Report identified Sam Williams as a player whose position might be at risk, hinting at him being a likely candidate for roster cuts. Davenport noted, “Sam Williams once appeared to be an ascending young edge-rusher for the Dallas Cowboys… Williams may have to jump-start his career elsewhere. Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, rookie Malachi Lawrence, and newly signed Von Miller appear to be locks for the 53-man roster.”
According to Davenport, the competition might leave Williams struggling to secure a final roster spot, as he would have to compete against players like Marist Liufau and James Houston, with Liufau being a key contributor on special teams. Although Williams might quickly find a new team, the available room in Dallas seems limited.
Throughout his three seasons with the Cowboys, Williams has accumulated 85 tackles, 9.5 sacks, recovered four fumbles, and forced three fumbles. At 27, he missed the entire 2024 season due to a preseason ACL tear. Despite playing all 17 games last year, he managed only one sack, reflecting minimal impact.
The Cowboys’ recent signings place Williams in a precarious position. Nevertheless, he embraces the challenge. Williams remarked, “I took all the reports, all the negative comments, everything, and I took it in and I looked at myself in the mirror because you can’t get better unless you know what you’re doing wrong.” He expressed a commitment to self-improvement, stating his approach to criticism involves self-reflection and effort. “At the end of the day, I just took all the negatives and, you know, look myself in the mirror. Not blaming no one else and just work. Just work, work, work. Put my head down and let my work speak for itself,” Williams added.
