Dallas Cowboys Triumph Over Houston Texans, Prescott Ties Staubach’s Record
The Dallas Cowboys rebounded from last week’s narrow defeat to the Baltimore Ravens with a 34-30 triumph over the Houston Texans.
Quarterback Dak Prescott proved instrumental in Sunday’s victory, connecting effectively with wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who amassed 189 receiving yards and scored a touchdown. Prescott’s solid performance included completing 32 of 45 passes for 335 yards, contributing significantly to Lamb’s success on the field.
This win marked a major career milestone for Prescott, as he tied the legendary Roger Staubach for the second-most wins in Cowboys franchise history. Both quarterbacks now share 85 victories, with Staubach having reached this milestone years prior. Staubach not only achieved remarkable career success, including two Super Bowl victories, but also earned induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame—goals Prescott aspires to achieve during his NFL career.
Prescott is still pursuing the record held by Troy Aikman, the Cowboys’ all-time wins leader, who secured 94 wins and earned three Super Bowl rings before his Hall of Fame induction. Prescott requires nine additional wins to equal Aikman’s record and ten to surpass it. With the current season’s progress, Prescott may achieve this record if his team maintains strong performance.
Following Sunday’s game, the Cowboys’ record stands at 2-2. They face a quick turnaround with an upcoming match against the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday, October 8. Tampa Bay is starting rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels, due to Baker Mayfield’s thumb injury recovery. “We gotta get back tomorrow at it,” Prescott told CBS’s Pam Oliver post-game. “It’s gonna be a quick turnaround. Use this momentum, use what we did in the second half, and just keep going.”
The Cowboys’ schedule grows more challenging after Thursday, with away games against the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles before hosting the Arizona Cardinals on November 1. The Packers and Eagles currently hold records of 2-2, both having faced recent struggles, while the Cardinals sit at 1-3.
To tie the all-time wins record this season, the Cowboys need 11 victories for Prescott. Twelve wins would establish Prescott as the franchise’s all-time leader. If the record is not reached this season, a healthy Prescott could likely achieve it by the 2027 NFL season.
