The New York Giants have made a surprising roster change as they kick off the 2026 NFL season. Veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton, the longest-tenured player on the team, has been released. This move saves the Giants approximately $3 million in cap space.
Slayton, who had a cap hit of $15.9 million, was initially set to play after making the roster out of training camp. The decision comes as part of adjustments under new head coach John Harbaugh.

Following his release, Slayton expressed gratitude on social media, writing, “Grateful for my time in NY. Seven years a Giant. Nothing but love for one of the most prestigious organizations in the NFL. Excited to see what’s next.”
Drafted in the fifth round from Auburn in 2019, Slayton made an immediate impact with 740 yards and eight touchdowns in his rookie season. Despite this strong start, he never became a primary receiver. He faced challenges with coaching changes and dropped passes, which affected his touchdown count over the years.
The Giants’ decision reflects their recent moves in free agency and the draft. New additions like Odell Beckham Jr., Darnell Mooney, and third-round pick Malachi Fields have reshaped the receiver lineup.

Beckham’s return was well-received by fans, and Fields’s performance ensured his place on the roster. Although Calvin Austin III suffered a season-ending injury, the competition was fierce.
Slayton’s departure might suggest that Malik Nabers, a top draft pick from 2024, is ready for the upcoming game. However, it remains unclear if Nabers will play in Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys.
If Nabers is absent, receivers Mooney, Fields, and Beckham will take on additional responsibilities for quarterback Jaxson Dart.

As Slayton navigates free agency, other teams may consider adding him to their roster if needing depth at the wide receiver position.
