David Crowley Secures Democratic Gubernatorial Nomination in Wisconsin
Wisconsin Democrats have chosen Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley over state Rep. Francesca Hong for the gubernatorial bid. This decision highlights the tension between moderate and socialist influences within the party. Despite leading in some polls, Hong, a Democratic Socialists of America member, lost after support for Crowley rallied from Democratic figures, including retiring Governor Tony Evers.
Crowley will now challenge Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany, a member of the House Freedom Caucus supported by former President Donald Trump, in an election likely to attract national attention. While Crowley is seen as the preference of the Democratic establishment, questions linger about his moderation.
Crowley addressed supporters at a Democratic unity breakfast in Middleton, alongside Francesca Hong, before starting a statewide campaign tour with Sarah Godlewski, the candidate for lieutenant governor. He acknowledged Hong’s contributions, emphasizing unity and inclusion within the Democratic Party.
Crowley stated, “We may not agree on everything, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t come to the negotiating table and figure out how to bring everybody under this big tent.”
He credited Gov. Evers as pivotal in his primary success. Evers expressed his support, describing Crowley as the future of the party and anticipating his success in the upcoming elections.
David Crowley presented himself as a contrast to Congressman Tom Tiffany, framing the race as a crucial battle against what he describes as “MAGA extremism.” Crowley’s background as a community organizer, his historic role as the first Black Milwaukee County executive, and his upbringing overcoming personal and family struggles, form the foundation of his candidacy.
Unexpectedly, Crowley withdrew from the race in early July but reentered after his wife interpreted a personal sign. His campaign focuses on priorities such as affordable housing, universal early childhood education, healthcare expansion, clean energy, and voting rights.
He has voiced skepticism towards partnering with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, reflecting a stance that aligns with more progressive elements of the party. Concerns existed that a Hong victory might have challenged Democratic chances in the governor’s office, further motivating party stalwarts to support Crowley.
Several Democratic leaders endorsed Crowley swiftly. The Democratic Governors Association pledged to work on maintaining the governorship within the party. The Democratic Party of Wisconsin declared full support, describing Crowley as “battle-tested” and ready to take on Tiffany’s policies in November.
Crowley’s campaign manager, Garren Randolph, highlighted Crowley’s focus on inclusivity and coalition-building, in contrast to what he criticized as the “division and extremism” associated with Tiffany and Trump.
Crowley aims to unify support from across the political spectrum, striving to address key state issues and present a collaborative leadership style as the election approaches.
