Delaware Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester recently shared her thoughts on the New York primary elections during her appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” The elections saw three socialist candidates win, defeating two incumbent lawmakers. When asked about the results, Blunt Rochester celebrated the engagement of voters rather than addressing the impact on the broader Democratic Party.
Blunt Rochester emphasized the importance of voter participation, especially as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary. She highlighted that politics vary depending on the locality, using the example of Alaska Senate candidate Mary Peltola, who focuses on “fish, family, and freedom” in her campaign. Blunt Rochester stressed that Democratic candidates must listen to their constituents and address local concerns.
People are engaged at a level they’ve never been engaged before, which is positive. We want people to participate. Politics are local, and we need to respond to the people’s needs.
When CNBC host Joe Kernen asked where socialism has been beneficial, Blunt Rochester deflected, suggesting discussing it in a future interview. Kernen later clarified that his remark was rhetorical.
The New York candidates—Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier—campaigned on a platform that included a socialist economic agenda, opposition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and criticism of Israel. They received endorsements from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
