Democrat James Talarico is showing strong momentum in the Texas race for the U.S. Senate. Recent developments reveal his lead over Republican Ken Paxton in prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket. For the first time, Talarico holds a 56% chance of winning on Kalshi, compared to Paxton’s 44%. This shift follows weeks of competitive polling in Texas, a state with a long-standing Republican dominance.
On Polymarket, Talarico also leads with a 52% chance against Paxton’s 48%. The shift favoring Talarico began early Tuesday afternoon. Robert Y. Shapiro, a political science professor at Columbia University, commented on the potential impact, describing the shift as a notable change in the midterms. He stressed that if Texas leans Democrat, it could significantly alter Republican politics and enhance Democratic chances of gaining a Senate majority.
Texas has historically been a Republican stronghold. President Donald Trump won Texas with a significant margin in the 2024 presidential election. Currently, Republicans hold a 53-45 Senate majority, excluding independents Sanders and King, who align with Democrats. Both parties see control over the Texas seat as crucial. Newsweek contacted Paxton and Talarico’s campaigns for comments.
Polling Data
Polls show Talarico’s favorable position. A Texas Public Opinion Research poll gave him a 45% to 40% lead. A Fox News poll had Talarico ahead 51% to 48%, within its margin of error. Extremely motivated voters also leaned toward Talarico by notable margins.
The Fox poll surveyed 1,006 registered voters between July 23 and July 27, with a 3% error margin. Another Texas Pulse survey by ReconMR for Texas A&M indicated Talarico leading 47% to 43% among likely voters, compared to a tied result in June.
This survey included 619 likely voters between July 27 and July 30, exhibiting a 4.7 percentage point margin of error. This suggests a close race rather than a secure lead for Talarico.
Implications for Ken Paxton
Ken Paxton faces the challenge of winning over moderates and independents. The Texas Pulse data showed Talarico gaining 23 points with independents since June. Paxton’s campaign has had difficulties, underlined by renewed scrutiny on past issues and less financial support compared to Talarico’s campaign.
Nonetheless, Texas remains a Republican-leaning state, with prediction markets sometimes swaying with minimal new data. Yet, Talarico’s current standing in both polls and prediction markets demonstrates his position as a strong contender.
The Texas Senate race has become one of the most significant and competitive contests in this election cycle.
