Family Faces New Challenges: A Rare Diagnosis Changes Everything

A family’s life in Ontario, Canada, changed drastically after their baby was diagnosed with a rare condition requiring continuous medical care. Jenny Wilson was enjoying a quiet day with her newborn son, Levi, when she noticed slight changes in his behavior just eight weeks after his birth.

Jenny, who has a 5-year-old daughter with her partner Logan Cook, initially thought Levi had a minor digestive issue. He seemed tired, drank less milk, vomited a little, and made grunting sounds. When checking him for a fever, Jenny noticed he was colder instead of warmer. His condition worsened as the day went on.

“I started to notice… his stomach felt hard,” Jenny recounted. “I thought… I must just be seeing things. I’ve never really squished his belly before. Was it hard or was I just imagining this?” Levi became increasingly distressed and pale. Although he calmed down in his car seat, Jenny trusted her instincts and took him to the hospital.

Medical Emergency Unfolds

At the hospital, doctors discovered Levi had a midgut volvulus, a severe condition where the intestine twists, cutting off its blood supply. This is often related to intestinal malrotation, a congenital issue with abnormal intestinal development.

Levi underwent three emergency surgeries in an attempt to preserve as much of his intestine as possible. The day before Mother’s Day, Jenny and her family received heartbreaking news that 90% of Levi’s intestines had been removed.

Further procedures included reconnecting the remaining intestine to the colon. Jenny faced another loss: the inability to breastfeed Levi due to his condition. “Losing the ability to breastfeed… was so devastating,” she shared.

Living with Short Bowel Syndrome

After three months in the hospital, Levi returned home but faced ongoing challenges. He lives with short bowel syndrome, depending on intravenous nutrition for 18 hours daily. A colostomy bag restricts his freedom to play as an active toddler. Simple activities like swimming or playing in the rain pose significant risks. Even a fever may lead to hospitalization due to possible bloodstream infections.

Jenny frequently faces judgment about Levi’s care. “People don’t always realize what another parent is carrying… such as life support for their baby,” she expressed.

Family Impact

Jenny reflects on how Levi’s diagnosis has affected her relationship with her partner. “Sickness can also mean for your children,” she realized, noting that challenges have strengthened their relationship. “It can either make you or break you,” she added.
